Youth and Family Counseling Services began in 1918 as the Mission of Help, an Episcopalian agency serving the poor and needy. In 1921, it became Youth Consultation Service, concentrating solely on counseling and becoming family oriented. Then in 1961, after many years of existing as a part - time agency with rented offices in different towns, the agency severed its ties with the church, became private, non - profit and non - sectarian and changed its name to Youth and Family Counseling Service.

It became a member of several United Ways and initially limited its services to residents of Berkeley Heights, Clark, Cranford, Garwood, Mountainside, Rahway, Scotch Plains and Westfield in Union County, NJ so it could more fully meet the needs of those residents.

Youth and Family Counseling Service then purchased and currently occupies a private house that has been converted to its needs at 233 Prospect Street in Westfield, New Jersey, a location that is convenient to downtown and has allowed for serving a larger population.
